Ok so now you know my concentration, I decided to do a picture of my glasses and my alarm clock. I use both of these items everyday and they are the first things I usually see when I wake up and when I go to bed. I am really proud of how I put the gel pen in the glasses to make it pop even more. I also like how some parts of the alarm clock kind of pop out more than others. When you look at this piece from a far, you think it is a picture. I got that comment from my parents and my friends. I am really proud of how this turned out with all the highlights and shadows. If there is anything that I could fix, it would be the background of this piece, it does not really look as realistic as the rest of the objects. I would try to fix this by adding more shadows. Apart from that small issue, I think there is nothing else that I dislike about it.
Out of all my pieces, this is one of my favorites. Before I go any further, I am going to tell you what my concentration is. My concentration is everyday objects throughout time. When I say throughout time, I mean throughout the day. For instance, I have this piece of my glasses and my alarm clock, in another piece I could have cereal, and in another piece I could have a half eaten sandwich. Every piece is something I have or do everyday and they are all at different times of the day.

For this project, I decided to use a small canvas because I didn't think I would have time to paint on a big canvas. The original picture of this was taken in Alaska 2 summers ago. With this painting, I finally decided to learn from my past mistakes and start with the background. So I am really proud of myself for that, otherwise, I feel like the mountains in the painting wont look as good. I also really love the yellow I put in the mountain on the right. It makes the trees seem like they really have a light shining on them. Also, Ms. Rossi told me to add some shadows under the buildings, and I am glad that I did because now they look even more realistic. If there was anything for me to go back and change, I would put more detail into some of the buildings. Like a window or some doors. I would also add in some cars into the painting. There were some cars in the original picture but I was afraid of messing up the painting with a tiny car on such a small canvas. I could even work on the clouds some more, to me, they just do not seem that realistic. My mentee and I decided to go with a beige color scheme for our mixed media. We started off by just pulling random pieces from different magazines and books and we realized we had should do this color scheme. I chose this angle because I love the lace string in the corner (it has a brings in a new texture) and I also love how the flower kind of pops out. The cork also makes the piece more 3D and I love how it comes off the page.
Sadly, I have no pets. I have had a fish before but I just thought that it would not be an easy thing to take a picture of especially through a fish tank. I told my friends about this project and how I have no idea what to do about it and then one of my friends named Allison said I could use one of her pictures of her dog, Duncan. I got to meet Duncan a month ago and he was the sweetest dog ever! By the time I started working on this project, Duncan had passed away.. I am so glad that I got to meet him before he left us and I am truly honored to do a pet portrait of him. I am still working on Duncan but this is what I have so far, When I was looking at the other ap art student's self portraits from past years, I kind of wanted to try something that I have not done before. I started off by taking pictures of myself in many different poses and also trying to show emotions in my selfies. This is the picture that I had really liked and Ms. Rossi liked. After I had my picture, I was trying to think of many ways I can try to make my self portrait unique. I thought about having a certain part of my face to have color in it and the other parts to just be black and white. Then I took that idea and instead of changing the colors, I thought about making it geometric. I decided to go with that idea and I started sketching out my face on a wooden canvas. I had a very difficult time with all the proportions on my face, I would make the nose too big or I would not align the eye in the right spot. That cost me a lot of time and eventually I had to project my picture onto my canvas to help with getting all the proportions right. After that I drew out all the triangles on the one part of my face and I filled in each triangle with one color that seemed to fit in that area of my face. I had done most of that work at home because I have a lot more paints at home and that way I didn't have to mix paints for every triangle. Those triangles took me a long time to paint and I had to rush to finish the rest of my face before our feel good friday. I am very happy of how it turned out though. I love how you can tell there is a light source above my head and I love how it looks realistic outside of the triangles. I was afraid that I would mess up my skin color after I finished the triangle portion of my face. I also like how the triangle colors still flow with the rest of my face. This is one of my favorite pieces! When we were given the topic for our next project, it took me a while to come up with good ideas for it. After a lot of thinking, I came up with three different ideas that I was pleased with. One of them was just a butterfly that has a lot of screws and bolts in it's wings. Another idea was to have a vine or plant grow out of my phone; I thought that would be a cool concept to work with because I could make it look like nature is trying to destroy the mechanical stuff. My last idea was having flowers that were made gears. I decided to go with the last idea because I felt like that would be a lot more interesting with all the little gears put together to make a flower. Little did I know that those little gears would take so long to draw. It took me a couple of days to finish one flower. My friend, Emmaly, then suggested to me to make a different kind of flower that doesn't have to have gears in it but could still look mechanical. So I decided to make a rose that looked like it was made of metal. I even put some screws in it to make it look even more mechanical. I then put in another flower that was made of wires and screws. After I made these flowers, I thought that it still looked too plain and I felt that it needed something. So I took the risk of putting in grass at the bottom. When I look at it now, I kind of wish that I didn't put in the grass, I just feel that you kind of lose the flowers and their stems in the grass. I also feel like there could still be more added to the sky but I am not sure what still. Out of all my projects, this one seems to be my least favorite. Maybe the fact that it is all one color and it is harder to tell the difference between the grass and the stems makes me like it less. Today we got to have some fun with the Art 1 kids and introduce ourselves to them. To be honest, I was a little nervous before meeting my mentee. My mentee was Justin and he seemed very nice. We talked about our favorite art pieces we have done, our favorite mediums, our classes, our siblings, and our latest art pieces.
The most interesting thing I found out about Justin is that he would go to Italy if he could go anywhere in the world because he has some relatives there. His blog link is http://justin-apex10.weebly.com/art-1 For this project, I thought about doing the interior of my water bottle, the inside of my storage bench with a bunch of stuffed animals in it, the interior of a closet, and the interior of my backpack. I narrowed these choices down to the inside of my storage bench and the interior of my backpack. I went with the interior of my backpack because I thought it had a good composition. After I decided to do that, I was thinking about doing it in either acrylic or oil. I went with acrylic because I just felt like that would be better for me. When I was working on the painting, I found it really hard to create the value in the top left corner of the book bag. I was trying to keep it from blending too much. If I had more time I would go back and put in the polka dots of my backpack onto the painting. The only reason I didn't add them before was because I was afraid that I would mess them up. I do like how my painting turned out overall because I liked how the shadows came out in some of my books and how the backpack doesn't just look black, it has got some purple tint to it. When I was coming up of ideas for an everyday object, I suggested to my friend, Jessica, to do a painting of a toothbrush. She didn't go with it so then I kind of stuck with the idea. So I took different angles with my toothbrush at home and this was the angle that seemed the best to me. Since this was my first oil painting, I am pretty proud of how it turned out. I chose to do a painting of my toothbrush as my everyday object. It took me a while to work with oil paints because they tend to blend a lot quicker compared to acrylic. Another thing that I found difficult was trying to paint the sink. I was trying to make it look as close to a sink as I could but it took some time to work on that. Oil paints also takes a long time to try and it got really messy at some points for me too :(( But I really enjoyed this project out of all of them so far. |
